Budapest and its surrounding region could have a single transportation system

Transportation in Budapest and its metropolitan area could be integrated into a single system
At Kelenföld, buses heading towards the Budapest metropolitan area may depart from the same place while operating under three different ticketing systems and sets of rules. Dávid Vitézy used this example in a Facebook video published on 3 November to illustrate the fragmented nature of the current system.

“It makes no sense,” he said, announcing that a regional BKK would begin operating from 1 January. According to Vitézy, public transport in Budapest and the surrounding region would then be managed as a single system.

A wider role covering HÉV and suburban buses

Vitézy said he had reached an agreement with Budapest’s mayor and Prime Minister Péter Magyar to expand the responsibilities of BKK, Budapest’s public transport organiser. Under the proposal, BKK would also have a role in organising HÉV suburban railway services and buses serving the metropolitan area.

The changes could also affect passengers travelling from Budapest’s District VII to destinations outside the city. Vitézy promised a more unified fare system, better-coordinated timetables and clearer passenger information, and said the new arrangement was intended to improve services.
