A dedicated luggage area has been installed in front of the second door. Depending on their size, it can accommodate between 15 and 25 suitcases or large backpacks. BKK, the Budapest Transport Centre, chose the layout after considering passenger feedback and its experience of operating the route in recent years.
The fleet being introduced specifically for the 100E will comprise 24 articulated buses. The first six entered service on Monday, 2 November.
Low floors, cameras and blind-spot monitoring
The new buses are fully low-floor vehicles. They are fitted with a modern passenger information system and onboard cameras, while blind-spot monitoring assists drivers. The vehicles also meet the latest transport safety requirements.
Their arrival comes as the direct airport service attracts a growing number of passengers. BKK figures show that the 100E carried around 10,800 people on an average day in August 2025. By August 2026, the daily figure had risen to more than 13,400.
That represents an increase of more than 20 per cent, or almost 2,700 additional passengers per day compared with the previous year. July’s passenger numbers also exceeded those recorded a year earlier.
Flight arrivals help shape the timetable
A system operating behind the scenes helps BKK respond to busy periods. Since spring 2026, it has used actual flight arrival times to forecast demand. If extra capacity is needed, staff can arrange more frequent buses before arriving air passengers reach the stop.
The 100E was also the first Budapest service to introduce Budapest Pay&GO, allowing passengers to pay by contactless bank card.
The new vehicles form part of a wider renewal of the capital’s bus fleet. Under a programme launched in 2025, more than 380 new diesel and electric buses are due to enter service by the end of 2027. Of these, 289 have already arrived and begun operating.
The buses currently used on the 100E will remain in service elsewhere in the city. They are being reassigned to other routes, including the 97E, 142E and 32.
What to know before buying a ticket
A separate ticket is required for the 100E. Since 1 October 2025, passengers with a Budapest travel pass, Pest County travel pass or Hungary travel pass have been able to buy a supplementary airport ticket for HUF 1,000 through the BudapestGO app.
