Traffic changes

Traffic changes

Cleaner air, pedestrian-friendly streets, and more spacious areas in Inner Erzsébetváros – the traffic in the inner part of District VII will change significantly starting from Sunday, June 22. Several street sections will be accessible only to pedestrians and cyclists, certain streets will be restricted to authorized vehicles only, and the current direction of travel will be altered in several places. After a test period lasting until the end of the summer, experts will adjust the final traffic regulations based on the feedback and experiences gathered. The goal is for this measure to make Inner Erzsébetváros a more livable area, where the interests of pedestrians and cyclists to become equal to those of motorists."

Traffic changes

Inner Erzsébetváros, the Inner part of District VII, is most highly dense residential areas of the capital, where the number of pedestrians significantly exceeds the number of those who travel by car. The narrow streets of the district are not suitable for simultaneously meeting the various needs of pedestrians and vehicles. That is why, at the initiative of Színes Erzsébetváros and with the assistance of the Climate Protection, Transport, and Urban Development Committee; BKK, Budapest Közút, and the VII District Municipality were requested to and have developed a new traffic regulation plan.

New traffic rules will come into effect from June 22nd

From Sunday, June 22nd, until the end of summer:

  • The section of Kazinczy Street between Rákóczi Road and Dob Street, the section of Dob Street between Rumbach Sebestyén Street and Síp Street (as a pilot), as well as the section of Csányi Street between Nagymező Street and Dob Street, may only be used by pedestrians and cyclists; motor vehicle access is prohibited (indicated with a red line on the map).

  • Entry is only permitted with authorization to the section of Király Street between Rumbach Sebestyén Street and Károly Boulevard, to the section of Madách Imre Street between Rumbach Sebestyén Street and Asbóth Street, as well as to Asbóth Street itself.

  • as a test Wesselényi Street A short section between Rumbach Sebestyén Street and Síp Street will become two-way, and Holló Street will be accessible by motor vehicle through this route.

  • The section of Akácfa Street between Wesselényi Street and Dob Street may only be used by pedestrians and cyclists between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Motor vehicle access is not allowed during this period — taxis are also prohibited.

  • The direction of traffic on Kis Diófa Street will be reversed; from now on, it will be accessible from Király Street.

  • On the northeastern side of Klauzál Square, in front of the market hall, two-way traffic will be eliminated. This section will be accessible in the direction of Dob Street, the same way as Klauzál Street.

Parking-related changes

At the same time as the traffic rules are introduced, the parking rules in Belső-Erzsébetváros will also change. New residential parking spaces will be designated on Wesselényi Street between Kazinczy and Síp Streets, Rumbach Sebestyén Street between Károly körút, and on several sections of Klauzál Square. On the section of Wesselényi Street between Síp Street and Rumbach Sebestyén Street – due to the two-way street – instead of the current, two-sided parallel parking, parking will only be possible on the south side of the street. During the planning, the experts took the interests of the locals into account, while preserving the number of residential parking spaces.

The traffic regulations may be finalized in the fall.

During the test period until the end of the summer, the experts will continuously collect experience and feedback, which will be examined and used to develop the final traffic regulations for the area.
