Name change procedure

Submitting an application for a name change, changing the form of a married name

 1.    Change of birth name: 

If the applicant was not born in District VII, Budapest, their birth record must be in the Electronic Civil Registry System (hereinafter: EAK). It is entered into the electronic civil registry system by the competent registrar of the place of birth. This can be requested by email, via e-Papír or via Ügyfélkapu.

If the applicant has minor children, the children’s births must also be in the electronic civil registry system. They are entered by the registrar of the children’s place of birth. This can be requested by email, via e-Papír or via Ügyfélkapu. If the applicant is married and the marriage did not take place in District VII, Budapest, or was concluded before July 1, 2014, the marriage record must be in the Electronic Civil Registry System (EAK), and the spouse’s birth must also be in the EAK.

The marriage is entered into the electronic civil registry system by the competent registrar of the place of the marriage, and the birth by the registrar of the place of birth.

Procedure fee for applications submitted from January 20, 2025:

The administrative service fee for an application to change a birth given name is HUF 13,000.

The administrative service fee for an application to change a birth For applications concerning the family name, as well as the birth family name and given name , the administrative service fee is HUF 18,000.

The service fee must be paid by transfer to account number 10023002-00299592-00000000. Reference: e.g. Névváltozás Kovács Géza (name change, followed by the name).

Please bring your ID card, address card, the completed form and a copy of the payment receipt to the appointment.

2.    Changing the birthgiven name: 

What can a given name change cover? For Hungarian citizens with several given names:

–       omitting one of the given names or

–       changing the order of the given names

Permission to use a name different from the given name in the register – excluding nationality name use – can still be requested in a name change procedure.

Given name changes fall within the registrar’s competence.

Procedure fee: free of charge.

3.    Changing the form of a married name: 

If the marriage did not take place in District VII, Budapest, and was concluded before July 1, 2014, the marriage record must be in the Electronic Civil Registry System (hereinafter: EAK). This is entered into the EAK by the competent registrar of the place of the marriage; you need to request this from the registrar of the place of the marriage by email, via e-Papír or via Ügyfélkapu. If the marriage ended after July 1, 2014 (by divorce or the death of the spouse), the marriage with the divorce or the death of the spouse is already in the EAK.

In addition, the births of the husband and the wife must also be in the electronic civil registry system. You need to request this from the registrar of your place of birth by email, via e-Papír or via Ügyfélkapu. The record must be in the electronic civil registry system even if the marriage was dissolved or ended due to the death of one of the parties.
