Déli Railway Station will be completely closed to rail traffic on October 10 and 11. The weekend maintenance also affects Budapest transport and passengers' usual transfer options, Telex reported.
During the two-day closure, work will be carried out simultaneously at several locations. Workers will repair switches, replace rails and sleepers, fix defects on the platforms, and restore the entrance to the tunnel leading toward Kelenföld and the retaining wall. As a result of the work, several speed limits will be lifted.
## From the platforms to the overhead wires
The maintenance doesn't stop at the tracks. The overhead lines and power supply system will be inspected, lighting and passenger information displays fixed, and the carriage pre-heating supply points maintained.
Dávid Vitézy, Minister of Transport and Investment, called the backlog in track maintenance one of the most serious problems of the Hungarian railways. In his view, the accumulated maintenance debt must be worked off while major developments are launched at the same time.
## A bigger reconstruction is also planned
Separate from the current repairs, more extensive work is also planned. As part of the Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan, the track in the Kis-Gellért-hegy tunnel would be rebuilt.
The tunnel would be lowered and widened so that double-decker trains can also reach Déli Station. According to Vitézy, this larger-scale improvement may follow the current repairs.
A brief practical note: Déli Station will be completely closed on October 10 and 11, so this change will affect weekend travel and transfers.
