Péter Fejes has been appointed Hungary's chief prosecutor
Parliament elected Péter Fejes as Hungary’s Prosecutor General on Tuesday, 3 November. According to HVG, 145 MPs took part in the secret ballot: 139 voted in favour, six voted against and none abstained.

Fejes took his oath of office after the result was announced.

The president’s second nominee secured the votes

Fejes was nominated by András Baka, Hungary’s president. He was Baka’s second choice for the post after the Tisza majority rejected the president’s first nominee, Zoltán Szathmáry.

HVG reported that Szathmáry did not receive Tisza’s support because his sibling is a suspect in the so-called gold convoy case. Being named a suspect does not imply guilt.

Baka said he had held dozens of consultations before putting forward his second nominee. He said the prosecution service needed a leader who understood its professional and internal workings, could confront its failings and had the resolve to defend the values of the prosecutorial profession.

The parliamentary group of the Tisza party also supported Fejes’s nomination.

Old case files could be reopened

Before his election, Fejes told the news site Válasz Online that he continued to believe in the prosecution service but considered changes necessary. In his view, poor communication had also damaged public trust in the institution in some cases.

He said he would examine whether decisions in specific cases had been made correctly and in time. Disciplinary proceedings could be opened where warranted. Fejes also said old case files could be revisited if new evidence emerged.
