Népszínház Street to Close for Tram Track Renovation

UrbanismNovember 7, 20263-minute read
Népszínház Street Will Be Closed Due to Track Renovation
Trams on Népszínház utca will be unable to follow their usual route through the junction for almost three weeks. BKV will renew the tracks at Nagy Fuvaros utca, along with the adjacent roadway and surfaces used by pedestrians.

According to BKK, the Budapest Transport Centre, the scheduled maintenance could make tram services more reliable and provide safer, better-ordered surfaces for drivers and pedestrians. Until the work is completed, public transport passengers, motorists and pedestrians should all expect restrictions.

The closure will take place in two stages

Népszínház utca will be closed across its full width at II. János Pál pápa tér. Work will take place on the Blaha Lujza tér side of the square from 9 to 18 November, before moving to the Teleki László tér side from 19 to 27 November.

During the first stage, Népszínház utca will only be accessible as far as II. János Pál pápa tér when approaching from Fiumei út. Szilágyi utca will become one-way towards Kiss József utca.

A temporary tram terminus will be set up in Dobozi utca. As a result, the entire street will become one-way towards Orczy tér. Drivers travelling from Baross utca towards Teleki László tér will be diverted via Lujza utca.

A bus lane will be introduced on Fiumei út, while a temporary stop for replacement buses will be created on Teleki László tér, just beyond the Dobozi utca junction.

During the second stage, drivers approaching from Fiumei út will only be able to use Népszínház utca as far as Vay Ádám utca. Traffic coming from Dologház utca will not be able to continue towards Nagy Fuvaros utca. Vehicles may only turn onto Népszínház utca towards Blaha Lujza tér. From Nagy Fuvaros utca, drivers will also only be allowed to turn left towards Blaha Lujza tér.

Two diversion routes will connect the area south of Népszínház utca with II. János Pál pápa tér. Drivers can use either Karácsony Sándor utca–Népszínház utca–Alföldi utca–Kun utca or Nagy Fuvaros utca–Népszínház utca–Kiss József utca–Szilágyi utca. From the square, the streets south of Népszínház utca can be reached via Kun utca.

Traffic lights at the Nagy Fuvaros utca junction will flash amber throughout the construction period.

Replacement buses will take over from trams

Trams 28 and 28A will run to Keleti pályaudvar via Fiumei út. Tram 37 will operate as service 37A between the temporary terminus at Teleki László tér in Dobozi utca and Sörgyár.

Tram 62 will run on a shortened route under the number 62A, between Rákospalota, MÁV-telep and Kőbánya alsó railway station.

Replacement bus 28 will serve the suspended section, running from the Népszínház utca stop at Blaha Lujza tér to Teleki László tér and Magdolna utca.

From 9 to 18 November, bus 99 towards Pesterzsébet will be diverted via Fiumei út between Blaha Lujza tér M (Népszínház utca) and Karácsony Sándor utca. In this direction, it will not stop at Kiss József utca, II. János Pál pápa tér M or Mátyás tér.

Express bus 217E will run to Keleti pályaudvar instead of Blaha Lujza tér.

The closure will begin on Monday, 9 November and end on Friday, 27 November. BKK is asking passengers and drivers to check the latest travel information before setting out and to allow for longer journey times.
