Establishing a registered partnership

“A registered partnership can be established between two persons of the same sex (two women or two men) before a registrar.

(Partnerships between a man and a woman are registered before a notary public!)

Establishing a registered partnership (hereinafter: BÉT) is preceded by a declaration of intent to establish a registered partnership. The date of the ceremony and other details are agreed with the registrar at that time. Both parties must attend the declaration of intent!

What to bring:

For Hungarian citizens:

–              valid ID card/passport  and address card

–              birth certificate. If your birth certificate is not available, the electronic form is also acceptable if it is in the electronic civil registry system. You can request the latter at the civil registry office of your place of birth or via Ügyfélkapu.

–              if this is not the first marriage/registered partnership for one or both partners and the previous marriage/BÉT ended in divorce, contact the registrar of the place of the marriage/BÉT by email or via Ügyfélkapu and ask them to record the marriage/BÉT together with the divorce in the electronic civil registry system. (If the marriage/BÉT was after July 1, 2014, it is already in the electronic civil registry system, so you do not need to request this.)

–             If the previous marriage/BÉT ended due to death, contact the registrar of the place of death of the former spouse/registered partner and ask them by email or via Ügyfélkapu to record the death in the electronic registry. (If the death occurred after July 1, 2014, it is already in the electronic civil registry system, so you do not need to request this.)
