Declaration of intent to marry

This requires attendance in person.

The intention to marry must be notified to the registrar of the local government where the marriage is planned – in Budapest, the district where the marriage is planned. The intention to marry can be notified to any registrar.

Couples of the same non-Hungarian nationality may also marry at the diplomatic mission of their country located in Hungary, provided that an international treaty and the law of the foreign country allow this.

An appointment is required for District VII, Budapest. Appointments can be booked on the https://idopont.erzsebetvaros.hu page, or by phone at 06-1/462-3182, 06-1/462-3246, 06-30/227-4652.

The couple notify their intention to marry together, in person, and the registrar records it in minutes.

The registrar sets the date of the marriage after consulting the couple.

The minutes of the notification of intent to marry are valid for one year.

TO NOTIFY YOUR INTENTION TO MARRY, THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS MUST BE PRESENTED:

For Hungarian citizens:

–          valid ID card/passport and address card

–          birth certificate. If your birth certificate is not available, the electronic form is also acceptable if it is in the electronic civil registry system. You can request the latter at the civil registry office of your place of birth.

–          if this is not the first marriage for the bride or groom and the previous marriage ended in divorce, contact the registrar of the place of the marriage and ask them to record the marriage together with the divorce in the electronic civil registry system. (If the marriage was after July 1, 2014, it is already in the electronic civil registry system, so you do not need to request this.)

If the previous marriage ended due to death, contact the registrar of the place of death of the former spouse and ask them to record the death in the electronic registry. (If the death occurred after July 1, 2014, it is already in the electronic civil registry system, so you do not need to request this.)

–          If the bride is expecting a child, you can request exemption from the mandatory 30-day waiting period, if we can provide a date for this. To do so, please bring the pregnancy care booklet.

It may be useful to know in advance that our ceremony room holds 15-20 people.

The room rental fee is HUF 19,050. If at least one of you has a permanent address in District VII, the room rental is free of charge.

If either of you is not a Hungarian citizen, please let us know at 462-3149 or at the kovacs.karolina@erzsebetvaros.hu email address, because a different procedure applies in this case.
